村田紗耶香氏の『世界消滅』という作品は、コロナ渦で人と人との接触が希薄になりつつある現代と重なるところがありました。施設に入っている人と面会できず、学校にも行けず、飲み会もオンラインで行われ、端末に映っている元気のない仲間の肩をポンとたたくこともできません。学校の授業も仕事もオンラインになると、画面に映っている世界がすべてになり、実物を見ないので、実際の現場の空気を読み取ることができなくなりそうです。
人は恋をして結婚し、子どもを作って新しい家庭を築く。私達はこれを普通だと思っています。しかし、ほとんどの人がそうしているから、それが普通なんだと思っているだけであり、人間の認識なんてものは、環境によって簡単に変わってしまうほど脆弱極まりないものかもしれません。小説の中の実験都市では、コンピューターによって人口が完全にコントロールされています。妊娠は人工授精でなければなりません。つまり、セックスをすることがなくなり、むしろ、実験都市以外で行われている夫婦のセックスは近親相姦であり、離婚の原因にもなるという設定です。夫婦は家族だから家族同士でセックスをすることが異常だと判断されるわけです。実験都市で生まれた子供は、人工授精をした女性と男性が育てるのではなく、子どもを育てる公の機関に渡されます。親はその都市に住んでいるすべての男性であり女性です。子どもはまるでハマチの養殖みたいに生まれてきて同じ服を着て同じ髪型をしています。心身に異常がある子供は処分されますから、明るく健康で優しい子供だけが成長するのです。小説の主人公の女性とその彼氏が、実験都市に引っ越して子供を産み、政府に内緒で子供を育てる計画を立てましたが、だんだん実験都市のやっていることに染まっていく様子がえがかれています。この世界では夫婦も親子も存在しません。みんな一人暮らしをしています。みんなが孤独なんですから、孤独という言語は必要ではなくなるのです。同時にみんながハッピーなわけですから、ハッピーというのはどんな状態なのか理解できない人だらけになります。
びっくりするようなカオスな現象が次々に起きてアッという間に読み終わってしまいます。世にも奇妙な物語を観ているような感じです。頭に浮かぶ映像は速度を変え、色彩を帯び、世代間のギャップを静かに埋めていきます。争いも孤独もない世界は、人間から本能を奪い、感情を麻痺させ、大切な何かを奪ったまま、人類をどのように変化させていくのでしょうか。読み進むにつれて、いつの間にか別の世界にフワッと吸い寄せられる奇妙な感覚をご堪能してください。

Sayaka Murata’s novel “世界消滅 The destruction of the world” has something in common with our world that human relationships are becoming weak because of the corona. Family members are not allowed at the facility, and students cannot go to the school. A drinking party is held online, and we cannot even pat our friends on the shoulder, although he is in need online. When the school lessons and work in the office are all online, the PC screen is everything. Because we don’t’ see the real thing, we are coming to be unable to get a feel for the atmosphere of the real place.
People fall in love, have children and make a home. We think this is normal. However, most people are doing it like that, so we believe it is general. The human’s recognition might be so vulnerable that the circumstance could change it. In the experimental city of the novel, it is set that the computer controls the population entirely. Pregnancy must be through artificial insemination. In other words, we don’t have to do sex, or rather, the sex except the experimental city is incest so that it could be a cause of divorce. The couple includes the family members, so the sex of the couple is abnormal. The parents do not raise a child through artificial insemination, but the child is sent to a public institution. The parents are all women and men in the experimental city. The children are born like the farmed yellowtail, wearing the same clothes, having the same hairstyle. Only bright, healthy, and kind children grow because the children who have physical and mental handicaps are killed. The heroine and her boyfriend moved to the experimental city, tried to have a child keeping it a secret from the government. But they are dying themselves in the government’s hue. In this world, there are no couples, no parent and child. They are living alone. Everybody is lonely, so they don’t need the word loneliness. At the same time, everybody is happy, so there are full of people who don’t understand what a comfortable situation is.
Many surprising and chaotic phenomena happening one after another; I finished reading this book in a blink of an eye. You would be feeling that you are watching the story of unusual (a famous Japanese drama on TV). The image coming to you changes its speed, wears a color, and fills the gap between generations calmly. The world without conflict and loneliness deprives a human of instinct, paralyzes our emotions, and robs us of something important. As it is, how this strange world will change humans? While reading, you will be drawn toward another world softly without your knowledge. Please enjoy the peculiar world.
