Scroll down. You can read in English.

New York life__The Spoiled Japanese

What a kind the Japanese are! If we don’t know something, we should say, “I don’t know.” Somebody will tell you with great attention to detail. However, when such a wrong Japanese move to New York, a catastrophe will occur. I will talk about the character of Japanese who have no habit of managing by themselves. It is my past self.

”Read it carefully! It is a big mistake to think that somebody will do everything instead of you! Look at the European. Unlike you, they will process by themselves after reading all.” the clerk at the post office said to me like this. She was scared because of her facial expression.

Even if it is not in New York but any foreign country, managing by yourself is required to live in foreign countries. There is no New Yorker who tells you, “please write your name and address here.” as the Japanese. When I tried to submit the address change notice to the post office in Manhattan, a clerk did not even hand a form to me and told me to find it by myself. I found a paper at the counter and went back to the contact with a document. But she told me to stand in line again. At that time, this post office was always crowded, and it was usual to wait for their turn for more than one hour. I didn’t want to line up again. Then, a lady lining up after me said, “She was standing before me. Do it soon.” I managed to submit the address change notice.

The bank is similar to the post office. When I asked the clerk to tell me how to fill the form to open my account, the man bank clerk threw lots of papers on the table in front of me with a thump and said, “Fill in these forms and come to the bank again. All necessary information is written in these papers. I had to make two accounts: an ordinary account and a current account. It took a whole day to read lots of documents from the man clerk and complete the forms.

At other times, the woman bank clerk said, “Why don’t you open your bank account? The interest will improve if you make an account today.” When I opened the account the first time, I couldn’t get a cash card and asked the bank to reissue it. I said to the woman clerk, “It’s okay to leave it in its current state as it is. I will be troubled if I cannot get a cash card again.” But the man bank clerk came again and said, “You don’t have to get a new cash card. You will use it.” Without my permission, he closed my bank accounts so quickly and made new accounts. I felt uneasy and went to the ATM and tried to use a cash card. The fat was in the fire! My cash card couldn’t work. I picked the receiver on the ATM to ask for help. But, the guidance required me to push lots of numbers. I was at a loss because I didn’t know what number was correct in my case. After a little while, the man bank clerk who opened my new accounts appeared to go home. I asked him why I could not use my cash card. He said, “You will not be able to use it for 24 hours after you get new accounts. The bank staff should tell it first to the customers. There are more troubles. When I went to the electronics retail store, the cellphone shop, etc., people in New York didn’t do many obvious things I could get in Japan.

How easy it is to live in Japan came across loud and clear. I learned much more strength necessary for life than what I learned at the school in Manhattan. I hope this blog helps people planning to live or study in foreign countries as much as possible.
